I remember I was out shooting pool with the big homie Barn Danholden when the bartender (who was also the BMG rep) told us that Big had been shot and killed. This was obviously pre-internet so it may have even been the day after it had actually happened, I can't remember. I do remember not being surprised tho, the East Coast/West Coast thing was way out of control. Tupac had already died about six months earlier and you could kinda feel like something was gonna happen.

So when we got the news I remember feeling a kinda 'told you so' smirk come on, and decided for myself that maybe too much art was crossing over into real life, but looking back, as a young white kid who was I to decide really. Being older now tho I do know that to die at 24 is mad young, and I wish it didn't have to end that way in order for all that crazy beef to come back down to earth.

Anyway if I wasn't a Kane man, I'd say Biggie was the G.O.A.T., but I'll give him the clubs (and the streets) anyway; drop any of his tracks and they still hit like they just came out. Plus who else was able to maintain street credibility (rap's arch nemesis) while achieving enormous crossover success? That lasted? No other artist, other than maybe Hov, has been able to hold people's attention for so long. Remember too his was only a 4 year career that ended almost 15 years ago. Shit is kinda craze. And don't even get me started on the ladies, they love some B.I.G., ain't that right boo, true...

So if you're in the clubs tonight or this weekend play/request some Biggie or just jam these on your ipod, in your car, or at home. It's still a dream, feel me?

"In 2005/2006 I had the worst years of my life. My health was failing and although it turned out OK in the end I felt at that time like I was dying. It was a huge struggle even to get out of bed and take a walk from my home to the studio – let alone work on music. But I had an album to finish. I knew I wanted to finish it even if it was the last thing I'd ever do.

One of the tracks was a collaboration with Mark de Clive-Lowe. I'd made a jazz ballad for him to remix, that was the plan for our collaboration. The lyrics didn't come to me all at once though, so one brave morning I decided to put on my finest tailored jazz suit and to wear it every day until I finished the song. Perhaps dressing like the old masters of jazz would turn me into one?

After sending the final result to Mark to play around with, I was listening to it at home when I read that one of the most legendary beat conductors of our time, J Dilla, had passed away – only 32 years old. Apparently he was spending his last days in the hospital making beats on his MPC. I listened to the lyrics of my own song and it struck me that the description of myself, a musical soul, stuck – just like it might have described his situation as well. And it also made me feel that it's never too late to be expressing yourself. And that the music doesn't even stop when the heart does.

Ten minutes later an MP3 of Mark's half of the song shook my inbox. It was a Dilla tribute."

Out of all the productions, beat tapes, collabs, remixes, this is might be my all time fave. Ya I know, I know. But look at it this way:

Runnin' was a big jam for me - for anyone really who was into hip hop in the mid 90s, it's an era defining classic that was getting played in the clubs too - but when this remix appeared on the Drop 12" it took things in a new direction; it brought the melancholy nature of the song to the forefront. Dilla's remix gave it another dimension, made it into something more introspective. Bittersweet.

Accomplished how? A simple flip of the Gap Band's Yearning For Your Love, which you probably know as Life's A Bitch by Nas. But who would touch that sample again? Everybody knows that track, it's where AZ gets his start, and it's on Illmatic. *Yikes*. Might raise a few eyebrows to say the least.

But I think that's the whole point. Taking something established and making it new, looking at it differently and finding something else there; another idea, another story. Inspiration.

That's Dilla: unexpectedly great, always.
"Dilla is my hero. Straight up. For many reasons.

When I was buyer at Montreal record stores back in the day (Tabou and Science, RIP), I'd pick and break everything that was Ummah related or with Jay Dee production that I could get my hands on. People weren't ready for it at the time though – trust me, they only caught on later.

But the minute I got Slum Village Fantastic Vol. 1? That's when my "studying" got deeper. The whole album had a special swing to it. It wasn't what SV were saying, but how they were saying it, while Dilla's productions kept that energy and feeling in the forefront. Truly some late night, dusty, bugged out, MPC basement sessions. I love that album and the freedom it shares with its listeners.

I remember getting beat CD's (that technically I wasn't supposed to) in the late 90's and it fucked my head up. To this this day I'd say if I was stuck on an island all I'd wanna have with me are J Dilla beat CD's. The way they were so awkwardly yet comfortably put together just illustrates both the bravery of and defiance in his art. As a fan it established Dilla as having the pallet of pallets and showed his range as an artist. As an aspiring producer myself it was food from a unique soul, lessons from a master, creativity that inspired awe.

The catalog of Dilla's work more than speaks for itself, and there's always some deeper spookiness to uncover. To me that's a true master at work. Whether it was time stretching jazz records to make it sound like Get Dis Money, or chopping and editing samples on his deathbed to make it sound like someone saying "Save me..." on Workinonit [*Editor's note: the 1:41 mark]. Even naming Two Can Win when the Sylvers sample says "Only one can win...", where he's referencing God is heroic art. (Those who check liner notes know who Dilla called "Two".) He's in a league to himself – something like hip hop's version of Miles Davis or Thelonious Monk.

Oh, and all due respect to Diamond, but J Dilla as an MC was unfuckwittable. No one in hip hop history has rhymed to the syncopation of hi-hats - and murked it - like he did on McNasty Filth, or created pockets that were mad original like the hooks on Jealousy. Those are good examples of his sound and signature, and even though it kept changing he always came straight from the gut and the heart. (Man, I'm even a fan of his cuts... Woooo! So sloppy and so ill with it...)

Every layer, flip, cut, snare, kick, bassline had an intricate ebb and flow that was untouchable. His character too, not wanting to be in the public eye so much - just a hermit in the basement - shows the dedication and time he put into his music.

All of the above are what make Dilla the best of all time in my opinion, and someone I hold in very high regard.

"In an era where everyone with an MPC was trying to expand on the DJ Premier formula of chopping and rearranging samples beyond recognition, J Dilla had his own approach, giving his samples enough breathing space to subtly evolve into something new and different. At times it almost sounds like he added little more to a sample than his signature drums (grooves ever so slightly out of pocket – but in a good way, often live hand claps), but listen closely.

One of the most valuable lessons I learned in production is that if you layer everything right, your track can sound beautifully minimal, almost as if there are hardly any layers at all.
"I was first put up on Jay Dee in '96 – I remember reading Chairman Mao's piece on him in Vibe. It made me realize that this dude was the sound behind the upcoming Tribe, De La Soul, and Pharcyde albums that I was starting to hear bits and pieces of, so from that point on I was on a mission to track down all of his work. That Keith Murray The Rhyme (Slum Village Remix) 12" - which was credited as being produced by the Ummah - was one of the early records I was GEEKED to stumble on when I was trying to snatch up whatever this guy had out.

I used to just put that instrumental on for hours on repeat and bug out. His use of melodies always had an effect on me – I'd instantly be taken to that PLACE, the close your eyes, scrunch your face, and break your neck place. And the DRUMS and that SWING!

I also wanted to pick something from the J Dilla era that contrasts that Jay Dee era, and the DJ Cam Love Junkee (Dilla Remix) is so different, and yet unmistakably him. In the early 2000's he went on a remixing rampage, no doubt being sought out more than ever once the world was truly catching on to his often imitated, never duplicated sound. I had been on a mission to find this 12" when Open Mind Music in SF finally got a few copies...

Live show bonus beat:

I went down to Toronto to see Jaylib live at the Opera House, must have been 2004. The line up was crazy: Doom was there too promoting Madvillainy, and Jay - hardly touring even on his own or with SV by that point - was supposed to make a rare "MC" appearance in support of Champion Sound.

The place was sold out - packed! - and everyone was anxious to see both Madvillain and Jaylib come off live. Thing was though no one knew up until show time if Jay was gonna be there or not, so when word got out he was in the building the atmosphere was electric. (Sadly, it turned out to be his last visit to Toronto.)

Anyway Jaylib were due up and when this song came on, shet! Frank N Dank came running out from the side of the stage barking "We are in this motherfucker!" and *blammo* the fucking roof blew off!

Then Jay grabbed the mic:

"Madlib, Frank, Dank, Dilla, chasing paper / blazing up in this bitch
We raise the stakes a little bit, and. Shut. Shit. Down."

...and everything went into face melt overdrive. Magic.

"My interest in Jay Dee really took off in '98/'99. I was living in Toronto, so that's kind of like having an unfair advantage, haha. It was incredible to see how one man's sound can take over an entire culture! Powerful music!

At the time I was a regular at Play De Record, and being a good customer had its benefits. New records would arrive on Thursdays, so I'd be there at 3 o'clock sharp, every week. I remember getting new shit as soon as it dropped – me and a few others. One week though, Junior (employee) just looked at me like, "Sorry dude, there's too many other DJ's who want this this week. You'll have to wait...".

I was so curious as to what had all these people tripping out. Junior then put Spacek's Eve - Jay Dee Remix ft. Frank N Dank on the turntable in the back of the store and about 25 people started freaking out. Heads banging in unison. Jaws all dropped. Everybody needed that white label!!!

I ended up waiting 3 weeks for my turn to get that record, and it was worth every second!"

FYI: The Spacek remix was universally the song most people wanted to write about. I chose Illo's story because I thought having to wait for the wax (3 weeks!, ha) was the most telling – especially in the era of instant downloads…
"I swooped Fantastic Vol. 2 when it dropped and Eyes Up was instantly my personal go-to jam. Some of the other tracks were much more popular/catchy, but that one just had a super gritty and funked out swing to it. Plus the sparce, kind of laid back flows and chorus are ill to me. Still one of my favorite beats in general from that time."

I asked Mensa why Jay Dee was so popular in Toronto, moreso than I've seen anywhere else:

"Why is Toronto such a big Dilla town? Through simple learning and application. Jay Dee made his presence known in Toronto during the early Slum Village days. The big concert promoter, Jonathan Ramos, had SV down for their first show back in '99. SV came through with a seven car entourage that had Phat Kat, Frank-N-Dank, Dwele, and others, way before their careers started. That made a big impression, plus the show was off the hook.

He also played a DJ set in 2002 at Roxy Blu that was retarded (*Editor's note: see above clip). We all knew he threw down his weird scratches on tracks, but to see Dilla legitimately rock a crowd made him a giant in our eyes. Since then local DJ's were pretty diligent in finding/playing any of hi productions on wax, as soon as it would drop: from Welcome To Detroit to Spacek, Fourtet to Busta, and everything else. On top of that Wednesday nights at Reilley's was the legendary hip hop night that pretty much solidified our stan-dom of Dilla's music.

I guess a lot of us in Toronto put him up there because he has the ability to make the kinda of knockin' beats that Premier or Large Professor made, but he was also able to make his soulful shit and his electronic stuff just as potent. You couldn't define him, and a lot of us grew up with Dilla taking us on an unpredictable journey.

Losing an artist at their peak means they'll forever be put into so many "what if" discussions. Best thing you can do is appreciate the work they left before they were taken away. Luckily for us, Jay Dee gave us so much to remind us of his legacy…"

"For me personally though? Dilla won me over before I - or any of my friends, really - knew who he was. His work was everywhere before we even had a name, and by the time we started figuring out who did what we realized he'd already made a lot of our favorite songs. After that following his music was something that pretty much everyone I knew did actively. And even when it stopped, well, it kind of didn't, you know?

Tribe's Find A Way was when it dawned on me who I was listening to. It's been a great ride ever since.

Rest In Peace!"
"I wrote a few paragraphs on Jay Dee but the more I wrote the more I realized I would basically take up an entire page, plus it's a touchy subject for me. But here's a specific idea I wanted to share:

Jay Dee could navigate through these real intellectual and heady circles via his more melodic production, then easily turn around and fucking obliterate you with some low-fi brilliance. Something for your brain, then something for your gut. It's hard being good at one, but being a master both? His talent was beyond human but he still was somehow able to convey so much emotion in his music.

I always have a new favorite Jay Dee track every few weeks, but I think right now it's Creepin On' You from his shelved MCA debut."

"When the Pharcyde dropped their debut record towards the end of '92 it changed my life in ways I won't ever be able to fully express in words. However after a falling out with J-Swift!, their first album's producer, they returned with their second album, Labcabincalifornia, featuring a few different people behind the boards, including some new kid from Detroit…

It's damn near 20 years later, and the beats J. Dilla (then Jay Dee) made for that record, well, they still can't be touched. Maybe it's just me, and maybe I'm getting old, and maybe I'm clinging on to an imagined past, but there's something I can still hear inside of those productions. Something, like, well, I don't know how to say it. A feeling? A vibe? An atmosphere? A depth? There's an emotion in there, deep down, far below the surface. Dude wasn't just making beats, he was feeling something. I imagine he was pretty young at the time, so I wonder if he himself even knew what he was creating.

Anyway, I lost track of Dilla's music over time. I was always into more lyrical shit, and, truthfully, SV was never really up my alley. I'd hear his name mentioned from time to time, that he was working with De La, or the Roots, or Common, or whoever, but most of it never really made it onto my radar.

Then a few years back I was going through a particularly rough break-up and got a seemingly random phone call from an old friend I hadn't heard from in quite some time. "Donuts", he said. "J. Dilla's new album. I haven't heard anything that's gotten me this excited about music in a long time." I was never a big fan of him, I told him. "Trust me. Listen to it." I don't know why - I get album recommendations from friends almost daily that I ignore - but there was a conviction in his voice, and I just got this gut feeling, so I went out and bought it the next day.

Donuts. Holy fuck. I still don't understand this album. But I don't think I ever want to. Turns out Dilla had died just a few days before...

Rest In Peace my friend. Thank you for changing my world."

"She Said, Jay Dee's remix... Well, I don't know if I've ever gone more than a week without listening to it at least a couple of times. It's been my go-to for the longest. When I'm up, I throw it on, it makes me happy. When I'm down, same thing, it reminds me that I'm not alone. The happy heartbreak...

On this St. Valentine's day, Dilla's remix of the Pharcyde's She Said is my song of choice for the lover in all of us."
